BEANOGRAPHY

This harvest from Kiamugumo Factory brings a distinctly summery expression to Last Splash.

The cup opens with ripe blackberry and red grape before moving into bright peach sweetness reminiscent of Peach Snapple. Beneath those headline notes are tropical layers of pineapple and coconut, followed by apricot and peach over a soft cream-like finish.

The fruit is vivid but well organized. Dark berry depth gives the coffee structure, while peach and tropical sweetness keep the cup bright and energetic.

Last Splash remains the clean, vivid, washed offering in the Phoenix lineup. Kiamugumo gives that role a generous Kenyan expression: juicy berries, tropical fruit, stone-fruit sweetness, and a finish that feels both bright and rounded.

ORIGIN

Ngariama, Kirinyaga, Central Province — Kenya

Kiamugumo is located in the Ngariama community of Kirinyaga, on the slopes of Mount Kenya.

Glacial water from Mount Kenya feeds the Kii River, which plays an important role in coffee processing at Kiamugumo. The surrounding farms grow coffee at approximately 1600 metres, where elevation and local conditions support the development of vibrant fruit character.

Kiamugumo is a comparatively young station. It was built in 2017 and now serves a cooperative membership of approximately 2,200 farmers.

This structure allows thousands of smallholder producers to deliver cherries into a shared quality system while maintaining the distinctive fruit intensity associated with Kenyan coffee.

PROCESSING METHOD

Fully Washed

In Kenya, the term factory usually refers to a community wet mill rather than an industrial manufacturing plant.

A factory receives ripe cherries from neighbouring smallholder farms and manages the post-harvest work: intake, sorting, depulping, fermentation, washing, and drying.

At Kiamugumo Factory, fully washed processing removes the outer fruit early and emphasizes the coffee’s natural clarity. This allows blackberry, red grape, peach, pineapple, coconut, and apricot to remain distinct rather than becoming blurred by extended fruit contact.

The result is a coffee with vivid acidity, clean fruit definition, and an articulate finish.

PRODUCER SPOTLIGHT

Kiamugumo Factory

New Ngariama Farmer Cooperative Society

Kiamugumo Factory forms part of the New Ngariama Farmer Cooperative Society, which owns and operates three factories in Kenya.

A cooperative is an organization structured around its producer members. Through shared processing facilities, quality systems, and market access, individual smallholder farms can combine their harvests while participating in a larger specialty-coffee supply chain.

Kiamugumo currently represents approximately 2,200 cooperative members. Its role is both technical and communal: it processes coffee after harvest while serving as a shared point of connection for the surrounding farming community.

This coffee therefore reflects more than one farm. It is the combined work of thousands of producers, the cooperative structure supporting them, and the careful processing carried out at Kiamugumo Factory.

WHOLE BEAN

To preserve freshness and allow you to grind specifically for your preferred brewing method, every Phoenix Coffee offering is packaged and shipped as whole bean.

Grinding immediately before brewing helps preserve the aromatics, sweetness, and flavour complexity that begin to diminish once coffee is ground.
